On women and romance novels

Myth #5: Women who read romance novels want men like Fabio. (Also, they can’t believe it’s not butter.)

I totally believe it’s not butter. Blecch.

Also, Fabio is not really my type.

I read somewhere that most romance novel covers are actually painted by men, and I’m not surprised. They usually strike me as a little too obvious somehow, and quite often, I don’t think the guys on the covers are really my thing.

(Well, ok, I admit it, there’s at least one exception – the portrait on the cover of Eloisa James’ The Taming of the Duke is quite lovely. And he doesn’t look like Fabio. I digress.)

Romance novels are really not about the pictures on the covers. They’re about the character described within, and, eh, my personal mental pictures are rarely Fabioesque. As I said, your mileage may vary.

On to Myth #6: Women above a certain intellectual threshold do not read – or, God forbid, write – romance novels (and the end of my blather on the subject)…
