Ok folks, given that it is now nearly two years after I wrote this post, I'm going to close down comments. "UPS sucks" and variants thereof are still some of the top hits for my blog, which is certainly not my fault - if the organization doesn't take it seriously and individual employees are inclined to bash those who complain (I do find it interesting that many of them have arrived via queries which are negative about UPS, which means either they are trolling or not being entirely straightforward), I can do nothing to fix that.

Customers and employees have a right to express their dissatisfaction, and others have the right to disagree. However, I think this thread has gone on long enough, given that I only see a UPS man here in Germany once in a blue moon. (I will say, however, that DHL here in Germany has never once delivered me a damaged package, and they do bring in packages to the door, even if they are heavy, so take that as you will.)

And the customers still have a right to complain about shitty service. Which, given the daily number of queries I get for "UPS sucks", is apparently still the case. I wrote this post two years ago and no longer live in the United States, so I can't say anything more than that.

look, working at UPS can be stressfull, but not once have i seen anyone throw jump on or do anything to destroy a package. they get crushed from bigger and heavier boxes. secondly i work crappy hours and get crappy pay for a PT hub worker. but hey money is tight and will work crappy jobs if it means i can make ends meet now. stop ripping on UPS unless you have been there to see what actually goes on behind the scenes.

OK I have read all post from Sups and Hourly. You both Suck. If a supervisor at UPS treated the employee better, then you would not have the problems. If UPS tried to hire people other the an 18 year old who feels the world owns them and not complain about having to work then it may help. That stated as to the hourly if you would keep your trap shut and do the job then you would not think it is a bad place. I have been with UPS over 18years as part-timer and the job is very hard and they do push you a lot. I do work a full time after I get out of UPS and work with people all day. UPS inside of the HUB's like 1st grade. Both would do will to look at this we give a service and that is people packages and they must be treated as gold. It is a JOB if you don't like it hit the road jack I will take your hours. Our company is the package service not personal needs services. We make a profit for the company and get paid well doing it. I have a full heath plan with a $10 co-pay after that it is paid at %100, and dental and vision and pay nothing for this. I get paid very well for a part-time job. I don't think or feel the company should give me pat on the back for coming to work on time and everyday. Guess what I'm steward for the Teamsters and have filed on issues at UPS 100's and 100's of time and the company has never came after me. 1. they know I do my job and keep my trap shut and talk with the Sups to address the issue and try to work with the management to get the issue fixed to the meet both ends. So treat the package as a future pay check and shut the hell up. Have a good one and just say how many jobs in this country are left that pay this much. Have a good one and you need grow up and take the time to give back if that means taking the package up two more steps.

Bryan: I'm not a labor rights lawyer, though I did once (about 15 years ago) work for a company that did not pay us for hours worked. A discussion with the local Department of Labor office, however, resulted in wages earned being paid. I don't know if laws have changed in the meantime, but if they had refused, the company would have been held responsible for paying several times my hourly rate.

As an employee, you have the right to be paid for the work you do, and further, not to lose your job for demanding your rights. I realize that's nearly impossible to do in this economy if you have a family to feed - even if you'll eventually get what you're owed or could successfully sue if your job was lost, it doesn't help in the meantime.

Customers can complain, but since most can't boycott entirely if they need anything shipped by someone who only uses UPS, I don't know how motivated they'd be by individuals who have no legal claims on the company.

And for the record, I don't work in the shipping industry. I don't even work for a for-profit organization, so I have no personal motive for making shit up. I resent the implication.

I assure you the story, at least mine, is true. I have had a series of horrible experiences with UPS living all over the country, and the number of hits I get per day for "UPS sucks" indicates that I'm not the only one by a longshot. A company having a lot of money doesn't indicate good practices - look at BP, for example. All you need is customers having limited choices (as they do with UPS) and companies don't have to behave very effectively. I also don't think UPS was always this bad - they have become this bad, however. I can't speak for the last 18 months, since I left the US, but before then, for at least 5 years beforehand, I had almost uniformly bad experiences with the company. Let me just restate that this was NEVER with individual personnel, but with the company's infrastructure - being able to make complaints, inquiries, etc. Well, except for my nearly completely destroyed documents - clearly someone had responsibility for that. But anyhow.

No, I wouldn't believe anyone's story just because they had money, I'm sorry. Money is never an indication of honesty, and is often an indication of just the reverse.

If UPS wants stories like this not to appear, they need to look at their own practices and employees. It's not the customer's responsibility.

Really just one person cannot show the whole picture. Ups would not be a fortune 50 company if it were no good . A company this bad surviving over 100 years? Yes I agree it is the management that needs to moniter their employees and not let this happen if it is even true. I can tell you I have a million dollars better yet ten would you believe me??
