Week 24: Ok, I finally buy it…

23 weeks, 4 days.

So to those of you who read regularly, you may be wondering why I’m posting less often. No worries, nothing’s going on, it’s just that Small Monster has been mostly quiet the past few days, and not much else has happened to post about. I can only make so many posts about how wonderful rain is and how I wish the Small Monster would be more wiggly more often before I bore even myself to death with my drivel!

On the other hand, having finally reached the “viable” stage of the pregnancy (note to Small Monster: Stay in there! Just because you’re viable does not mean you’re ready to come out!), I think my head has finally accepted that we’re really, honestly going to have a baby in a little over 16 weeks, and so I’m finally really thinking about labor and delivery and the first few weeks at home without that horrible fear that if I plan for it, something will go wrong, and aside from being devastated, I will also feel like a damned fool for tempting fate with my excitement. This is, I expect, rather common in women who’ve miscarried, so it’s not just my own personal neuroses that were hanging on to the last shreds of pessimism. I let myself go to the library yesterday and check out books on labor and baby care (though I have quite a few of the latter here of my own), and for the first time felt no guilt or reservations about doing so. I am… God forbid I say this… really excited.

Yes, I know, many of you who know me took at least 10 minutes to pick your jaws up off the floor after that. It’s the apocalypse, you thought. Krista… is… excited… about something. Something that doesn’t involve chocolate or an expensive plane ticket abroad. Oh… my… God…

To which I say: bad people. No cookie. You should have more faith in me than that.

;)

So really, world… I’m, um, gonna become a mama soon. And sacrifice years worth of sleep (yes, I know there will be no sleep, really, and the best response I can give to that is the first paragraph of this post from Dooce’s blog) in the first several weeks. We know that. But so what. Soon our Small Monster will be here, and that is, pardon my regression to the 80′s, totally awesome.

(In other news this week, I made this recipe from Mrs. Mustard’s (a.k.a. the Perogy Princess) lovely blog a couple of nights ago – and let me just say, it’s as delicious as advertised. We made it with buffalo (no fat to drain!), and made the sauce with extra home-mixed chili powder because we’re spice freaks, and it was mmmm mmmm good! You should make it this week. Really. It’s very yummy, and pretty quick to put together!)
