Week 17: And, the results are in…

16 weeks, 4 days.Wow… so we went to our genetics appointment today, and I think to say it went awesomely well would be an understatement.

First, the geneticist tells us that our test results were good. Really good. So good that she said she had to check twice to make sure she saw what she thought she saw.

As in this good (click the image for a larger, easier-to-read version):

I apparently have a lower risk of this baby having Down’s syndrome than a 15-year-old would. My odds dropped from 1 in 247 to 1 in 11,000.

Yayyyyy :) And the open neural tube defects/spina bifida risks look good too. So really, it doesn’t get much better.

Or doooooes it?

Well…

We got to see the Small Monster today. Who incidentally has a name, but that’s a secret. Here are a couple of shots…

You can see bits of the face and the nicely developed spine – very clearly a baby, not a cell phone as others have surmised. (Friends were wondering if I was having an iPhone, and if so, if they could have it…)

There’s even a cute little arm visible on top :)

The ultrasound was awesome. We got to see all sorts of bits and pieces of the baby, and everything looked fantastic. It was really thorough, and even though sometimes we couldn’t tell what we were looking at, other times it was clearly a cute little baby in there.

And the doctor? The perinatologist thought everything looked super. As in, “if that were my baby, I’d want it to look like that.”

So baby is structurally sound, the genetics look good, and there’s plenty of amniotic fluid for swimming, even though it’s been super hot.

That is some kind of awesome, I tell you. :)
